Our clients had a demanding brief however we were lucky enough to speak the same language and the original design presented to them turned out to be very close to what was ultimately carried out. The logistics of carrying out the works due to the limited access, proved to be the main challenge of the entire project. On the other hand, being an introvert building, planning permits for a contemporary back elevation were plain sailing.The property is well hidden within the UCA of Qormi with a humble entrance along a dead end alley.  It had been left to neglect for a number of years and the clients needed not only vision but also faith in us as their architects when making this investment. The original structure dating back over 100 years was still very well preserved but the ad hoc additions made through the years and the over grown garden made it very difficult to see into its potential.

The proposal included the preservation of the old structures and the construction of an extension in reinforced concrete.  This was purposely left exposed in contrast to the original fabric of stone slabs and wooden beams.  Above the kitchen area is a double volume which gives an idea of what is to unfold throughout the rest of the building.  From here the perforated steel staircase leading to roof level can be seen casting interesting shadows against the walls.

One of the most interesting features of the house is the terrace which cantilevers over the pool in a light steel and wooden structure, making it possible to draw the pool closer to the house but also saving some valuable garden area. The three leaf aluminum door overlooking the pool slides and hides behind the kitchen wall, opening the whole of the indoors.  The brief included two wild cats and the intent was to maximize the indoor outdoor flow for the cats to roam freely.

A stone staircase leads to the upper floor, where the one authentic room was kept and extended to create a large main bedroom with walk in wardrobe and free standing bath.  The whole of the bedroom is cantilevered over the ground floor terrace and can be seen as a monolithic dark volume from the garden area. Here again the choice of materials was such that it contrasted heavily with the original fabric.

The material palette consists of steel, timber, concrete and natural stones.  The flooring at ground floor is local hardstone whereas carrara was used in the main bedroom.  All materials chosen age naturally.  Moreover, the house has large expanses of glass which allowed for the use of dark tones.

The project two 2 years from conception to completion.  As with all residential places it keeps changing to fit the inhabitants and their changing needs.
